On 12th June 2021, Denmark played their first group stage game of the Euro 2020 against Finland in Copenhagen. The coronavirus pandemic caused the delay of Euro 2020. This game is supposed to be a celebration that things are starting to get back to normal. But it did not turn out like that. One of Denmark’s key players, Christian Eriksen, suffered a cardiac arrest during the game.

I watched Premier League matches regularly. I was one of the spectators who watched it live at home. I am not a fan of Christian Eriksen. But I had seen him play in the Premier League when he was at Tottenham Hotspurs.

Seeing Eriksen collapse and fall face-first on TV is horrifying. I was sitting there praying that he would be fine. I can’t imagine the feeling of those watching in the stands. The game eventually continued after he was declared stable.

Christian Eriksen is not the first player to suffer cardiac arrest during a football match, and he definitely will not be the last. There are players who did not survive after a cardiac arrest during the game.

Here are four things that Christian Eriksen’s tragedy taught us:

Life is Fragile

According to the Danish team doctor, Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and was ‘gone’ before the resuscitation. A top-flight football player with no history of heart problems got a cardiac arrest. This could happen to anyone.

We will not know what will happen to us. We can’t predict the future. What we can do is to treat every day like it’s the last day of our life. Live our life to the fullest every day and make sure we have no regrets.

We Need to Be Alert at All Times

There are a few people to thank during this tragedy. Things could have been much worse if these people are not around during the game.
